Archive: 1 2 Currently I am working in what I see as two distinct styles. The first style is essentially a three dimensional interpretation of my two dimensional drawings (see Father and son below). I sketch out a drawing on my media balancing the composition until I'm satisfied. I pick a point to start the carving and work out from there. Decisions about texture, depth of cutting, concave or convex surfaces are made as the work progresses. The process is more like automatic writing than anything else. I enter a mental zone where the decisions are automatic and the piece becomes what it becomes. The free line and the playfulness I feel while working remind me of the work of Alexander Calder. Probably the first major artist I remember being aware of. My second styles is evolving out of an amazement I felt when I explored the work of Jean (Hans) Arp. His work is very organic and sensuous. I did a few pieces with Arp's work in mind. While my work is significantly different from Arp's I am intrigued with it. (see Snake in the grass below). I was surprised when I showed these pieces at how many people would stroke them. I think there is a little animus perceived in these pieces that people respond to. Again the work is an almost a automatic response to the material I start with. I locate points to work from and make decisions as I am carving that lead to a balanced yet energized composition. |
